Wednesday the 26th of May saw ACTSport bring together 260 students from across the ACT and the surrounding regions attend the Lord’s Taverners Disability Multi Sport day.
There were 7 sports in attendance at the MPowerdome in the south of Canberra, Rugby League, Basketball, Football, AFL, Bowls, Tennis and
major partner on the day Cricket ACT.
The intention of the day is to get students living with a disability active while presenting an opportunity to become involved in mainstream sports.
The variety of sports was well received by the students and carers alike with Football and Cricket proving to again be a favourite. Supported by Lord’s
Taverners for the second year running, the event appears to be in great hands with the chance to again expand in 2011.
The event marked the launch of the 2011 Lord’s Taverners – Young Athletes with a Disability Scholarship program. This year the scholarship pool has
grown to $7500 with the hope of being able to assist more young athletes achieve their sporting goals. Past winners have included athletics star
Adam Cunningham, Swimmer Ellie Tonkin and up and coming athlete Lachlan Foote.
While being of great benefit to the participants the Multi Sport Day has provided a great training ground for future development
officers and sports administrators in Canberra as 28 students from Canberra Institute of Technology coached and assisted throughout the day.
The partnership between the CIT Sports and Fitness students and ACTSport will again be on show at the Snedden, Hall and Gallop Athletics day in the
last half of the year.
A special thanks to the supporters on the day – Lord’s Taverners, Cricket ACT and MPowerdome.
