Joel Tyrrell - Volleyball Joel debuted for the Australian Senior Men's team in the recent series vs Canada in Australia and played so well he was selected to go to the Asian Cup tournament in Iran. He is the first ACT athlete in over 15 years to play for a senior Australian volleyball team on the international stage. Joel is an ACTAS and Canberra Heat Academy athlete who has continued to develop through the ranks of elite volleyball.After coming through the ACT junior ranks, Joel has played in the National League for both the Canberra Heat and AIS and has since become a part of the AIS program. In the past 2 years he has travelled and competed internationally with both the AIS team and the Australian Junior Men’s team.This year, after years of hard work and dedication, Joel was selected to make his senior international debut for Australia in a home test series against Canada. Joel was selected in Game 1 and he performed so well he was then selected for the following 3 games of the series and ended up playing a vitally important part in the Australian teams success. As a result of this great performance and earning an MVP award, Joel then was selected to head to Iran to compete in the Asian Cup event which sees the Top 8 sides from the powerful Asian region compete for title of Asian Champs.He again played well above his age and experience and proved to be an invaluable part of the Australian team. The stats from these 2 events see him sitting in the upper echelon of talent in his chosen position and prove he has a long and exciting professional career ahead of him.

Deahnne McIntyre – Power LiftingCanberra’s Paralympic powerlifter Deahnne McIntyre won a silver at the 2010 IPC powerlifting world championships in Kuala Lumpur. Deahnne lifted 127.5kg to take out silver in the women’s over 82.5kg weight division, reaffirming her place as one of the best in her category. The gold medallist lifted 142kg 14.5kg more than Deahnne.

Harriet Burbidge-Smith BMXDuring the 2010 BMX World Titles held on 30 Jul after a sluggish start Harriett fought back hard to become 14 year Girl 20 inch World Champion. This was a mammoth achievement as Harriett was feeling unwell during the heats and fought back hard hard to win this event.

Henry Bessell - Snowboard - slopestyleOn Friday 30 July, Thredbo played host to a gathering of international and local snowboaders as they threw down the second leg of the 2010-11 World Snowboard Federation World Rookie Tour. Henry Bessell 14yo from Canberra, and Perisher Winter Sports Club rider, stomped his best tricks and spins on the stair-set, cliff-drop box and two 40ft jumps to claim the title of Best Male Grom (12-14yo). He will now compete against the world's best junior snowboarders in Ischgl Austria in 2011. This amazing result follows his win at the Australian Junior Series "Big Air" event held at Mt Hotham on Saturday 24 July. James Bacueti – GymnasticsJames claimed three medals and first place overall in the level 8 open event at the Australian Men’s Gymnastics Championships held in Canberra.James aged 15 secured his overall victory by two marks, scoring 150.863 over the two days competition. James won Gold on the rings and vault and silver on the pommel horse.James was also part of the Australain Team that won Gold against New Zealand during the Trans Tasman challenge which was also fought out at the championships.Angus Colloff – DivingAngus Colloff was named best Australian diver during the Australian junior elite age Championships in Perth.Angus who represented the Canberra Diving Academy won gold in both the platform and 3m events to go with his silver medal in the 1m event.Angus was also selected in the Australian Team to compete in the world junior championships in September in Tucson, USA.Dakota Smith – ArcheryDakota Smith has moved to first in the cadets longbow archery world rankings. He has had a remarkable year and has emerged as one of Australia’s most highly rated young archers. At the National indoor titles he won the longbow men’s cadet division compiling a massive 734points over two days. He smashed the under-17’s record while his score of 387 on day one also set a new benchmark in the national cadets and national junior categories.

The Tuggeranong Matildas – Football
The Tuggeranong Matildas took out the under 14 girls cup in dramatic fashion defeating the woden Valley Redbacks 0 -0 and a 2 -1 penalty shoot out win. Both sides were evenly match with genuine chances hard to come by and not even 20 minutes of extra time could separate them after a full time score of 0-0. Both teams struggled from the penalty spot before Woden’s Holly Fogarty put her shot in the woodwork giving Tuggeranong the wind.The match was both teams seventh in five days and the Redbacks were clearly exhausted in the closing stages as the Matildas proved the more accurate at the finish. Captain of the Tuggeranong Matildas Kristy Helmers was named player of the tournament.
